What’s the issue?

The increased usage of and rising CSA expenditures for private day special education placements have caught the attention of Virginia legislators and other policy makers, who are seeking ways to reduce these costs and find ways for children with disabilities to be served in the public school system.

What’s at stake?

The future of private special education funding within the current “sum-sufficiency” protections of the Children’s Services Act.  Currently under consideration is a proposal to shift all special education funds from the CSA to the Virginia Department of Education, to then be distributed back to local school divisions to be spent as they see fit to provide special education services.  This could result in the loss of sum-sufficiency and less educational funding available for children with disabilities.

What’s on the program?

Attendees will participate in interactive presentations on the history of this issue, hear the results of the whitepaper analysis on this issue produced by the VAISEF Special Education Advisory Group, and learn more about how to participate in grassroots advocacy efforts with legislators and other key decision-makers to preserve these precious resources.

Who should attend?

Private special education school CEOs and education directors,

Board members of your facilities and interested parents of your students with disabilities who want to advocate for preserving private special education funding.
