Medication Administration Training for Youth

Medication Administration Training for Youth (MATY)  is a 16hour (minimum) curriculum for medication administration training approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing (1.26.10). It was developed by a Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF) work group to “increase the safe administration of medications by writing a relevant curriculum and training guide for instructing providers who work in private children’s residential facilities or schools for students with disabilities.”

Approval of the MATY curriculum provides a new developmentally appropriate, population specific curriculum as a training option for the staff in the above described facilities licensed by:

  • Department of Social Services
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services

Employees of Non-VAISEF Virginia facilities that meet the above definition and hold one of the named agency licenses are eligible for this Virginia Board of Nursing approved medication administration training.

MATY has been designed as one part of a facility’s comprehensive Quality and Safety Program. It is intended to work in conjunction with a facility’s  policies and procedures  to govern the safe administration and management of medications.

MATY Course Components

  • Class Time – a minimum of 16 hours
  • Competency Based Training
  • Written Test
  • Facility Orientation (for those not trained in their own facility)

The goal and responsibility of the instructor is to ensure that those who obtain certification have mastered the material and tasks.

The implementation of the MATY training programwill commence with the start of the 2010-2011 school year. More details will be posted here as they are available.
